The Stanford Police Department is recognizing Sgt. Greg Hill for October’s Officer Spotlight for his courageous act in the line of duty.
Hill responded to a house fire in Stanford alongside firefighters on Oct. 21. Initial reports were that a male and female were possibly still inside the residence.
“Sergeant Greg Hill was the first responder on the scene and without hesitation made entry into the residence. Battling heavy smoke, heat and fire, he searched the house in attempt to locate the persons,” a press release states. “He was unable to locate anyone but did locate a small dog that was in distress.”
Hill was able to get the dog and himself out of the residence as conditions worsened.
“Stanford Fire Department then made entry to attempt to locate anyone in the home and battle the fire,” the press release states.
It was determined that the residents were not home at the time and there were two dogs in the residence – one rescued by Sgt. Hill and the other later rescued by the fire department.
“Sgt. Greg Hill is commended for his efforts, running into a burning house and putting his own life and safety in jeopardy in an attempt to save the lives of the residents believed to be inside,” the press release states.
Hill has been in law enforcement for 30 years. He began his career at Stanford PD in 1995, reaching the ranks of Sgt. and Captain before transferring to the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife where he served 10 years.
Hill rejoined SPD in 2015 and is currently serving as Sergeant.
