While the homeowners and pets are alive and uninjured, a home in Stanford was severely damaged by a structure fire Friday night.

The Stanford Fire Department (SFD) responded to 516 Danville Ave. at about 6:50 p.m. on Nov. 28 for a reported structure fire with the house full of smoke.

“Engine 7 arrived to find a two-story single-family home with heavy smoke pushing from the eaves on multiple sides,” said SFD Fire Chief Scott Maples. “Command was established and an offense attack initiated.”

Heavy fire was visible through an open door and two occupants, who were the homeowners, were outside and confirmed no one remained inside.

Crews made entry through the right side and encountered extreme fire conditions.

“The bulk of the fire was knocked down within five minutes,” Maples said. “A secondary fire was discovered on the second floor directly above the stairs, consisting of a chair and piled combustibles, which was quickly extinguished.”

Mutual aid from the Lincoln County Fire Department provided water supply, additional manpower, ventilation and overhaul.

“Several pets were located and treated with pet oxygen masks,” he said. “They were taken to a local veterinarian for treatment.”

Further investigation revealed the fire originated in the front entry room on the first floor. The fire then extended upward through the open stairwell to the second floor and by rollover into the kitchen.

“The remainder of the home sustained heavy heat and smoke damage,” Maples said.

SFD and LCFD were assisted on scene by Lincoln County EMS and the Stanford Police Department.

“Stanford Fire Department Chaplain assisted homeowners with help from a local church and the American Red Cross,” Maples said.

The cause of the fire was determined by be accidental and caused by a space heater.

All occupants were deemed safe and no firefighter injuries were reported.
