By Sterling Guesser
This feels like déjà vu. I got seven out of seven picks right again this week.
After nine weeks of predicting high school football games, I am now 61 out of 69 (88.4%). Note: I started the picks after the first week of games.
You can continue reading below to see perfection in action. Here we go (local high schools first in alphabetical order):
- Boyle County (8-1)-The Rebels cut a swath through the district and rounded out the district schedule with an as-predicted running clock win over Wayne County. This week, they will do some Bronco busting when they go to Lexington to finish the regular season at Frederick Douglass (6-3). Freddie D is a formidable opponent, but they will not find victory in this game. Boyle County wins 35-7.
- Casey County (1-8)- Casey is the odd-man-out in the five-team district and will miss the playoffs. This week’s game will be their last hoorah, and they will want to go out with a win at McCreary Central (3-6). It won’t happen, though, as former Casey Coach Sam Marple will lead the Raiders to a 42-18 win.
- Danville (7-2)- After the OPEN week of rest, recovery, and reflection, the Admirals are ready to finish the regular season by hosting Caverna (2-6). Danville will run away with this one 48-7.
- Garrard County (5-3)- Garrard County snuck by Mercer County with a one-point win to ensure a home playoff game. Now, they want to win bragging rights against their old-rival Lincoln County (7-2). Can the Lions roar in Death Valley? See the Lincoln County section for the prediction.
- Lincoln County (7-2)- Lincoln County will honor their seniors this week in their last regular season home game. So far, this group has turned in the program’s best regular season record since 2007. Now, they want to put the cherry on top of it with a season-finale win against Garrard County (5-3). The story lines are great…the coaches are first cousins, the players all know each other as neighboring counties, the rivalry goes back multiple generations. It will be a fun, intense game to end the regular season and the winner will be……….Lincoln County 31-21.
- Mercer County (1-8)- Mercer County almost got their second win of the season at Garrard County but it got away from them. This week, they go to John Hardin (5-4) to finish the regular season with the Bulldogs. The tough season will continue for the Titans as they feel both the bark and the bite of the Bulldogs in a 42-13 loss.
- Pulaski County (7-2)- PC won the sister-school showdown last week with Southwestern but they have a tall task this week with a Log Mountain trip to play Bell County (9-0). The Marrons might be the favorite, and they might win the game, but I stopped picking against Dudley Hilton’s Bobcats a long time ago. Bell County wins 32-28.
- Rockcastle County (8-1)- The Rockets continue to roll. Outside of Bell County a few weeks ago, to whom they lost decisively, their schedule has been really favorable. This week that continues when they host an uncharacteristically poor team from Southwestern (1-8). Can the Rockets soar again this week? See the Southwestern entry below for the prediction.
- Somerset (8-1)- The Briar Jumpers are now on an eight-game winning streak and would like to continue that this week and then into the playoffs. The last regular season opponent is Hazard (4-5). The Jumpers will thump Hazard 28-7.
- Southwestern (1-8)- The Warriors have suffered a tough season this year and will limp into the playoffs next week as the #4 seed in a four-team district. Before that, they will have to drive over to Mount Vernon to take a beating from a determined Rockcastle County team (8-1). The Rockets blast off to a 35-7 win
Kentucky Semi-Pro Games (College Football):
I was 8 out of 8 last week with the college games. See, if I put my mind to it, I can do it but it just does not interest me like it used to.
Let’s pick ‘em:
UK (2-5) could not stop Rocky Top. This week they will not be able to stop Auburn on the road…..
Louisville (6-1) took care of business against Boston College. This week they will get a road win at Virginia The…..
EKU (3-5) lost to Tarleton State. This week they go to Central Arkansas where they will get a close victory…..
WKU (6-1) got a Tuesday night one point overtime win against Louisiana Tech. This week they roll over New Mexico State…..
Murray State (0-8) got pummeled by Youngstown State. Newsflash—they will lost this week to Southern Illinois…..
Morehead State (4-5) squeaked past Valparaiso with a four point win. They keep winning this week at home against Davidson…..
Georgetown College (5-2) was idle last week. This week they travel to Bethel and get another win….
Lindsey Wilson (7-1) beat Faulkner last week and have an open date this week…..
Centre College (3-4) lost to Trinity in Texas and will be back home this week again Berry College. This won’t be a berry-picking day for the Colonels and they lost another football game…..
Editor’s Note: Sterling Guesser has always been a local football fan. He became a savant prognosticator when he was involved in a car accident with a semi-truck carrying a load of footballs. He was not badly injured, but ever since a pallet of footballs fell on his head in that collision, he can see the future of football games. He is also a fictional character, and his picks are purely for entertainment purposes.
