LCSO makes multiple drug arrests

By Abigail Roberts

Three people were arrested by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office on drug-related charges in December, according to court records.

Dec. 4

A man was arrested on Main Street in Crab Orchard Dec. 4, after being stopped by Chief Deputy Michael Mullins.

According to the arrest citation, David L. Padgett, 58, of Jim Weaver Road in Crab Orchard, was stopped after he was seen leaving a residence known to deputies for drug-trafficking. The registration plate on Padgett’s car was bent on the end and not legible and the rear glass was also broken and covered in tape.

“Upon stopping, the driver admitted to leaving from a residence that deputies had recently seized suspected drugs and currently have an active investigation into drug trafficking at this location,” the citation states.

Padgett allegedly told deputies there was nothing illegal in the vehicle and denied deputies consent to search the car.

“Based on the RAS (reasonable articulable suspicion) of him leaving this location and him admitting that he left this location, I deployed my K9 partner, Major, around the vehicle,” Mullins said in the arrest citation.

K9 Major alerted to the passenger side door and a search was conducted.

Mullins located a baggy containing a white, crystal substance inside of Padgett’s right watch pocket. He also located a baggy with several pills inside, which Padgett allegedly said were neurontins that he takes for back pain.

Padgett was not willing to talk to deputies but allegedly said he was not prescribed the pills and got them from someone else. He also admitted to using methamphetamine that morning.

He was charged with license plate not legible; windows not safety glass; possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine); possession of a controlled substance (drug unspecified); and prescription controlled substance not in proper container.

Padgett was lodged in the Pulaski County Detention Center. Mullins was assisted in the arrest by Sheriff’s Deputies Aaron Steele, Austin Price and Logan Smith.

Dec. 7

What began with serving a probation violation warrant, ended with several arrests for drug-trafficking, according to Chief Deputy Michael Mullins.

On Dec. 7, Mullins traveled to a residence on Ephesus School Road in Waynesburg to assist Deputy Chad Combs with serving a probation violation warrant on Carolyn Foley.

When deputies arrived at the residence they noted odor of marijuana and located pills and marijuana in plain view.

The residence was secured and a search warrant was obtained.

During a search of the residence, deputies located a large amount of suspected marijuana inside the residence, as well as approximately $3,500 in U.S. currency, along with digital scales, baggies and percocet pills. These items were allegedly found in the bedroom belonging to Wanda Berryman, 63.

The marijuana was found in a safe and the money was found on Berryman’s person as well as in her purse. She told deputies she bought the percocets that day and was going to take them to sleep.

While deputies were processing the scene, another resident, Shon Berryman, 39, arrived in an irate manner and told deputies he had marijuana and methamphetamine in his possession.

At this point a scuffle ensued between Deputy Ron Luster and Shon Berryman. Berryman was tased and attempted to flee.

While deputies gave loud verbal commands to stop resisting, Berryman became loud and distraught and continued to resist arrest, according to the arrest citation.

He was tased again, as deputies were unable to take Berryman to the ground. Berryman ripped the barbs out and tensed up, taking an aggressive stance towards Mullins.

“Deputies were able to take him to the ground at this point and after a brief struggle, placed handcuffs of,” the citation states. “At this point (Berryman) was lifted from the ground and further searched.”

Deputies located marijuana in his pocket. Suspected methamphetamine was located in a cup inside of his truck. Lincoln County EMS arrived on scene and cleared Berryman.

Wanda Berryman was arrested and charged with trafficking in marijuana (less than 8 ounces); possession of drug paraphernalia; and possession of a controlled substance (drug unspecified).

Shon Berryman was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine); possession of marijuana; resisting arrest; menacing; and disorderly conduct.
