Peerless Pigskin Picks

By Sterling Guesser

Seven for seven! I got them all right and I seem to be hitting my stride as the season wears on and the team data piles up week-after-week.

After eight weeks of predicting high school football games, I am now 54 out of 62 (87%). Note: I started the picks after the first week of games.

I really think I can repeat my performance this week if the teams live up to their potential. Here we go (local high schools first in alphabetical order):

  1. Boyle County (7-1)-The Rebels steamrolled Lincoln County to capture the district title (even if they lose this week, which they won’t, they win the tiebreaker) and now they host Wayne County (3-5) to finish the district part of the schedule. Boyle is on a roll and will roll Wayne County 49-0.
  2. Casey County (1-7)- Casey lost to Mercer County last week in what was effectively the play-in game for the 4th spot in the district. Casey County goes to Lexington Catholic (6-2) this week and that will not be a fun trip for them. The Knights will vanquish the Rebels 56-0
  3. Danville (7-2)- Danville fell to Lexington Christian but wrapped up a home playoff game by finishing second in the district. They have an OPEN date this week and then finish the season in two weeks with a win against Caverna. Danville will have a chance to win one or two playoff games, too.
  4. Garrard County (4-3)- Garrard County is coming off an OPEN week and gets back in action with a district game against Mercer County this week. Garrard started the season a young roster and as they more experience they get better. See the Mercer County entry for the pick of this game.
  5. Lincoln County (6-2)- Lincoln is licking their wounds after getting manhandled by Boyle County last week. They go to Russell County (3-5) this week for the third and final district game. With a win, Lincoln County gets a number two seed and home playoff game. Rusell County is trending downward as the season wears on but they have also gotten into a harder part of their schedule. They won three of their first four games and have lost four straight games since then. Lincoln County will hand them their fifth straight loss by a score of 35-7.
  6. Mercer County (1-7)- Mercer County got their first win of the season and, unfortunately it will prove to be their only win this year. They beat Casey County but will have no such luck this week when Garrard County (4-3) comes prowling into Harrodsburg. The Golden Lions win 42-14.
  7. Pulaski County (6-2)- The Maroons took their lumps in the hardest part of their schedule when they lost two consecutive games a few weeks ago. Since then, they’ve been handing out the lumps, not taking them. They pounded a good North Laurel team last week and will host a not-so-good Southwestern (1-7) this week. See the Southwestern prediction for this pick.
  8. Rockcastle County (7-1)- The Rockets beat McCreary Central last week and now travel to Knox Central (4-4) for a game that has playoff hosting implications. The winner will be the #2 seed behind Bell County and get a first round home game. The Panthers will be the second-best team Rockcastle has played this season, the first being Bell County. Knox Central lost to Bell 43-15, while the Rockets lost to them 39-6. This game will be close, and anything can happen when you play in far southeast Kentucky. I think Rockcastle is a slight favorite and I will go with them to win 28-27.
  9. Somerset (7-1)- The Briar Jumpers have won seven straight games after losing the season opener. They had an easier time with Monroe County than I expected, winning 35-14, and wrapped up the district championship. This week, they host McCreary Central (3-5) in what will prove to be a mismatch. Somerset will win this one 42-6.
  10. Southwestern (1-7)- Southwestern is the younger sister to PC in the Pulaski County school district. In fact, they split out of PC about thirty years ago. They are usually really solid battling with their PC and, in fact, have won eight of the last ten, but they won’t have a chance in this one. Pulaski will win this one 49-0.

Kentucky Semi-Pro Games (College Football):

I was 6-3 last week, with Louisville surprising me and Eastern and Western letting me down.

Let’s pick ‘em:

UK (2-4) lost a moral victory overtime game to Texas. This week they will lose to Tennessee at home…..

Louisville (5-1) shocked the world with a win against the U in Miami. This week they beat Boston College at home to become bowl eligible and maybe get into the playoffs conversation…..

EKU (3-4) lost to North Alabama. This week they host Tarleton State and will lose to them…..

WKU (5-1) lost to Florida International on Tuesday night and will play Louisiana Tech this Tuesday. Western will win this one on the road…..

Murray State (0-7) lost to South Dakota State last week. It does matter who they are playing this week (Youngstown State) because if they are playing, they are losing….

Morehead State (3-5) beat Marist last week but will get another win this week when they travel to Valparaiso…..

Georgetown College (5-2) beat Cumberland from Tennessee and will travel to Bethel this week. The Tigers get another win….

Lindsey Wilson (6-1) suffered their first loss of the season at Campbellsville. This week they will get a home win against Faulkner University…..

Centre College (3-3) got back to .500 this week with a win. They travel to San Antonio, Texas to play Trinity University. The Colonels will be as outmatched as Davy Crockett and his men were at the Alamo. Trinity will win this one easily…..

Editor’s Note: Sterling Guesser has always been a local football fan.  He became a savant prognosticator when he was involved in a car accident with a semi-truck carrying a load of footballs. He was not badly injured, but ever since a pallet of footballs fell on his head in that collision, he can see the future of football games. He is also a fictional character, and his picks are purely for entertainment purposes.
