SRO October Spotlight: Sgt. James Mayfield

By Abigail Roberts

Serving as the Lincoln County High School SRO (School Resource Officer) has been a rewarding opportunity for Sgt. James Mayfield.

The Stanford Police Department is recognizing Mayfield for the October SRO Spotlight.

“We want to take a moment to recognize all of our School Resource Officer’s who work hard every day ensuring the safety of the students and staff while fostering crucial relationships within the schools,” SPD said in a press release. “We appreciate our SRO’s and what they do in their roles.”

Mayfield brought with him about 20 years of experience in emergency services and police in Somerset before joining the Stanford Police Department.

He served as SRO at Lincoln County Middle School for two years before being promoted to Sergeant and transferring to the high school in September.

“Being an SRO at LCHS is a gift to me in many ways,” Mayfield said. “I get to protect kids, witness to them and most of all care for them when they need someone to lean on.”

Mayfield said it’s a very rewarding position that he never would have thought of before being given the opportunity to serve as SRO.

“Watching them grow from children to young adults to take on the world, knowing that I may have made a positive impact on them, is humbling,” he said. “Serving as Sergeant over the division is an honor and also rewarding.”

Being sergeant allows him to get to know other kids throughout the county before they get to the high school, and also make sure the other SRO’s in the department have what they need to be ready for any situation.

“Being an SRO is about building relationships, and it’s a blessing to be able to serve this community and the kids,” he said.
