Ginseng, marijuana and a shot-up vehicle

By Abigail Roberts

In a bizarre chain of events, a man was arrested for trafficking in marijuana after claiming another man was trying to steal his plants.

It began on Brad Petrey Road at about 1:35 p.m. on Sept. 12 when deputies responded to the area after a caller stated someone shot his vehicle.

When deputies arrived, they met with Greg Spoonamore who stated he was Ginseng hunting when Darrell Dowell, 58, of Crab Orchard, came down and accused him of stealing his chainsaw.

Spoonamore stated he did not steal the chainsaw, but Dowell proceeded to shoot his vehicle.

“The front glass, driver side and back window were all shot out,” according to the arrest citation.

“I found over 8 spent shell casings on the ground.”

Dowell allegedly admitted to shooting the vehicle.

“He also stated that they had tried stealing his two marijuana plants that he had growing,” the citation states.

Dowell was detained while deputies gathered more information and applied for a search warrant of his property.

“He stated that he had only two marijuana jars inside of the house,” the citation states.

Later that evening, deputies executed the search warrant and found large amounts of marijuana inside and outside of the house.

They also found several firearms and a handgun.

“Large amount (of) American currency was located near the marijuana,” the citation states.

LCSO Deputy Brandon McIntosh was the arresting deputy.

Dowell was arrested and charged with trafficking in marijuana (enhancement) and criminal mischief.

He was lodged in the Pulaski County Detention Center.
