Peerless Pigskin Picks

By Sterling Guesser

I got 9 out 10 of the high school picks right last week, only missing the Garrard County game. Let’s get into this week’s predictions (local high schools first in alphabetical order):

  1. Boyle County (2-0)-The Rebels survived a second-half counterattack by Lexington Christian but held on to win 28-21. This week it is a different Lexington faith-based opponent when Boyle travels to play the Knights of Lexington Catholic (1-1). The Knights will not win this jousting match, and Boyle will return with the crown jewels and a 49-14 victory.
  2. Casey County (0-2)- Casey got staggered by Bourbon County 48-0 last week. Up next is Adair County (0-2) in the battle of winless border neighbors. As much as I’d like to see Casey County win, it will not be this week as Adair County takes out its early season frustrations and wins 35-6.
  3. Danville (2-0)- The Admirals are riding high in the water. As I predicted, they are now on a two-game winning streak after losing twenty-three straight. New head coach Steve Stonebreaker has them believing in themselves and they are starting to reclaim their position in the football ranks.  They beat Fairdale last week and will travel to Anderson County (1-1) this week. They will be flying the victory flag after a 21-14 win in Lawrenceburg.
  4. Garrard County (1-1)- The Lions pride suffered their first loss in their new stadium at the hands of an explosive Lawrence County team 57-30. This week, Middlesboro (1-0) emerges from the meteor crater to travel to Lancaster and, unfortunately, will hand Garrard their second new stadium loss 48-28.
  5. Lincoln County (2-0)- As predicted, the Patriots derailed the Estill County Engineers last week in Garrard County’s bowl game. This week, they will travel to “Nickle City”, as CB’ers know it, to tangle with the West Jessamine Colts (1-1).  Lincoln will saddle the Colts with a loss and come home with a 28-21 victory.
  6. Mercer County (0-2)- Yikes. The Titans got rolled by Campbellsville 56-8. It will not get any better this week when the Atherton Ravens (2-0) visit Alvis Johnson Field. Will the Titans get a win? Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore!” Atherton wins this one 55-12.
  7. Pulaski County (2-0)- The Maroons beat Bryan Station 49-27 in Boyle County’s bowl last week. They will be at home this week against the North Hardin Trojans (1-1). Don’t expect any wooden horse surprises, as PC will repel the men of Troy 35-14 to stay undefeated.
  8. Rockcastle County (2-0)- The Rockets shot down Russellville 60-20 in North Laurel’s bowl game. This week, they travel to Whitley County (1-1) for a little stiffer competition, but this one is hard to pick. Why? Rockcastle’s schedule has been softened up of late and it is hard to tell if Colonel Whitley’s Colonels are down or not.  In a pick ‘em game, I’ll take Rockcastle 21-20.
  9. Somerset (1-1)- The Briar Jumpers got a 35-16 win over East Ridge last week to pick up their first of many wins to come this season. They’ll be back at home this week against cross-town county rival Southwestern (0-2). The series wins are in favor of Somerset and this season will be no different. The Jumpers will hop into the endzone one time more than that the Warriors to win 14-7.
  10. Southwestern (0-2)- See above. It is going to be an uncharacteristically down season for SW.

I was 9/10 last week but I think I hit 10/10 with these picks.

Kentucky Semi-Pro Games (College Football):

I was 5-2 in my in-state college picks last week. I will redeem myself this week with he predictions below:

UK (1-0) disappointed their fans by not destroying Toledo. They will host Ole Miss this week, and, oh boy, BBN is not going to like this pick, but the C-A-T-S are going to get a L-O-S-S…..

Louisville (1-0) beat up on little brother EKU in a money game for the Colonels. This week the Cards will beat up on former President James Madison in a Friday night game. The birds win big…..

EKU (0-1) will host Houston Christian University, a member of the Southland FCS Conference. They used to be Houston Baptist before 2021 but decided to be more inclusive. EKU wins this one in a close score…..

WKU (2-0) will travel to Toledo to play the team that challenged UK last week.  The Hilltoppers will struggle in this one and Toledo will win a close game…..

Murray State Racers (0-1) got outraced by East Tennessee last week. This week, I am sorry to say they will get another loss when they host Southeast Louisiana…..

Morehead State (1-0) survived a close game against a guy named Allen. This week they will not be so fortunate when the travel to Normal, Illinois to play the Redbirds of Illinois State…..

Georgetown College (1-0) travels to Ohio for a game with University of Rio Grande. Despite the river by the same name forming the border of the US and Mexico along the southern border of Texas, this college is in Ohio. Who knew? Not me.  Georgetown wins by at least 100-0…..

Lindsey Wilson (1-0) surprised me by beating Texas Wesleyan last week. This week they travel to Florida to play Ave Maria University. The big news here is the school’s team name, which is “Gyrenes”, a slang word for the United States Marines. The school’s founder was a Marine and the school adopted the Marine nickname. Also, Ave Maria means “Hail Mary” in Latin. I would never, ever pick against the Marines, so I’ll take the Gyrenes to win on a Hail Mary pass with no time remaining…..

Centre College (0-0) opens at home this week against longtime rival Hanover College. I know a few people who went to school there and they called it “Hangover” College. I think the sober Colonels of Centre College win this one in convincing fashion…..

Editor’s Note: Sterling Guesser has always been a local football fan.  He became a savant prognosticator when he was involved in a car accident with a semi-truck carrying a load of footballs. He was not badly injured, but ever since a pallet of footballs fell on his head in that collision, he can see the future of football games. He is also a fictional character, and his picks are purely for entertainment purposes.
