Peerless Pigskin Picks

By Sterling Guesser

The blazing heat this summer just about wore me down and cooked my cranium at times. I thought football season would never arrive, but week one of the high school season is in the books and college football gets underway this week. Let’s get into the predictions (local high schools first in alphabetical order):

  1. Boyle County (1-0)-The Rebels came marching home from a big battlefield victory over Bullitt East in Bowling Green Saturday night.  Justin Haddix’s football machine will clip the wings of the Lexington Christian Eagles (1-0) this week in the Rebel Bowl and send them back to Lex-vegas with a 41-14 loss.
  2. Casey County (0-1)- The “other” Rebels did not fare as well this week losing their opener to Fleming County. As much as it pains me to say it, I do not see a win for them this week against the Colonels of Bourbon County (1-0). No, it’s going to be an unromantic, ugly night in Paris as the Colonels take the Rebels to the woodshed and get a 42-0 win.
  3. Danville (1-0)- New fleet commander Steve Stonebreaker has righted the ship for the Admirals. They beat Fort Knox last week to break their 23-game losing streak and now they’re poised to create a new winning streak when they play Fairdale (0-1) in the Marion County Cooperage Bowl. Look for the reinvigorated Admirals to open up a whole barrel of explosiveness on the Bulldogs, sailing past the dogs 28-14.
  4. Garrard County (1-0)- Coach Spencer Crutchfield led his Golden Lions to a season-opening ten-point win over North Bullitt in the Death Valley Bowl.  Spence has a young team, but they are responding to his coaching. I see them roaring again this week in their own bowl game when they make Lawrence County (0-1) regret the long drive to Lancaster. The Lions win a close one 22-21.
  5. Lincoln County (1-0)- The Patriot defense was stellar in the home bowl game opener.  Madison Southern had a short field throughout the first half but the Patriot picket-line repelled the attacks and pulled away to a comfortable 21-point win. Lincoln makes the short drive to Lancaster this week to play Estill County (1-0) in the Golden Lion Bowl.  Without a doubt, the Engineers will be derailed by Levi Rogers’ troops in this one, with the Pats winning 35-7.
  6. Mercer County (0-1)- The Titans got splashed big time by Tates Creek, giving up 66 points in the Fort Harrod Bowl. James Harrod would not be happy about the hometown defense in that one. Mercer plays Campbellsville (0-1) this week, who lost to Dudley Hilton’s Bell County Bobcats last week.  Lots of teams have lost to that team so you can’t look at that loss as a real defining loss. I see C-ville toppling the Titans this week by a score of 28-21.
  7. Pulaski County (1-0)- The Maroons convincingly beat large school Henderson County last week and will play another big school this week when they battle the Bryan Station Defenders (0-1) in Boyle County’s Bowl. None of the Lexington public schools, except Frederick Douglas, seem to care about winning football games. Just like Boyle County is going to do, Pulaski County will send their Lexington opponent home with a loss.  PC will find the Defenders to be mostly defenseless and pull away 41-7 in this one.
  8. Rockcastle County (1-0)- The Rockets blasted off the 2025 season with 31-point win at Jeffersontown. This week they play 1A Western Kentucky powerhouse Russellville (0-1) in North Laurel’s bowl. The Rockets will blast the Panthers all the way back to Logan County with a 35-6 win.
  9. Somerset (0-1)- The Briar Jumpers could not get out of the thickets in the briar patch last week. South Laurel beat them by 11 points.  Coach Clevenger will have the bunnies ready for East Ridge (0-1) when they meet this week in South Laurel’s Bowl. Somerset will thump the ridge runners 49-0.
  10. Southwestern (0-1)- The Warriors got scalped at Barren County last week in losing a close one. This week, they will host the Campbell County Camels (1-0) from Northern Kentucky.  It’s a Saturday game, not on Wednesday (hump day), but the Camels will still get the win. I see Southwestern falling for their second time in as many outings, losing 30-12.

I am also predicting that I will be 10-0 in my picks above.  Follow each week to see how I do.

Kentucky Semi-Pro Games (College Football):

UK opens with a MAC patsy and will beat Toledo 100-0…

Louisville will host EKU and, unfortunately, EKU is the expected patsy here. The Colonels will cash that cupcake-check and learn what they can from a 48-14 loss…

WKU already snuck in a game and beat Sam Houston last week. They play North Alabama this week and will win the football game 48-7, but North Alabama will win the fishing and hunting contests…

Murray State Racers will race past East Tennessee 34-21…

Morehead State plays Allen. I don’t know who Allen is, but it is brave of him to play a whole other team by himself. Even though the data is incomplete, Morehead will win 42-17…

Georgetown College will roll U-Pike

Lindsey Wilson will lose to Texas Wesleyan, because the opponent is from Texas…

Centre College opens up the football season the following week.  Their players are taking advantage of the later starting time to memorize their textbooks and iron their fraternity sweaters.

Editor’s Note: Sterling Guesser has always been a local football fan.  He became a savant prognosticator when he was involved in a car accident with a semi-truck carrying a load of footballs. He was not badly injured, but ever since a pallet of footballs fell on his head in that collision, he can see the future of football games. He is also a fictional character, and his picks are purely for entertainment purposes.
