STANFORD – Since 2018, Chief Deputy Michael Mullins has had his K9 partner Luma by his side. In that time, Luma has not only kept Mullins safe, but also Lincoln Countians by helping nab bad guys, provide evidence for drug convictions and track down missing people.
After being diagnosed with an aggressive form of bone cancer, K9 Luma has officially retired from service as of this week.
It’s hard news for her partner and friend, who is used to having her by his side.
“She’s not just a dog, yet a family member, a partner and a deputy,” Mullins said. “The bond between a handler and a K9 is one that can’t be broken.”
Luma was purchased with a combination of community funds and grants in 2018 and was trained by Southern Coast K9 in Florida. She was trained in narcotic detection, human tracking and article search.
During her time as a LCSO K9, Luma has proven to be a valuable asset as she was deployed on hundreds of traffic stops that yielded over $100,000 in drug seizures, several thousands of dollars in cash and weapons, all of which resulted in numerous arrests and convictions.

“Also during her career, she was deployed to locate discarded items and tracked several missing persons and fleeing suspects,” the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release. “One of Luma’s favorite things to do was to visit schools and show off her skills.”
Mullins has asked for prayers for Luma and his family as she enjoys her final days.
Coming to work without her won’t be the same, he said.
“It will definitely be hard to come to work without her, after her being by my side all these years,” he said. “Luma girl, you were the best partner and dog a family could have. No doubt your viscous bark and growl kept us safe all those nights.”
While her career of chasing bad guys is over, Luma will spend her final days with her family and all the tennis balls she can chase.
Anyone who would like to send Luma tennis balls or treats can drop them off or mail them to the sheriff’s office at 104 N. Second Street, Stanford.
A retirement ceremony will be held at a later date.
